Leading the way at Vaca Muerta: Tecpetrol sets new 6,579-meter drilling depth record
Tecpetrol has reached a new drilling depth record in the Neuquén Basin, cementing its position at the forefront of Vaca Muerta’s development. Made possible by the integration of innovative technologies and close collaboration across teams, the milestone represents a significant step forward for the Fortín de Piedra field.
The breakthrough was enabled by the first deployment of Downhole Motor (PDM) technology to a total depth of 6,579 meters, overtaking the previous record of 5,743 meters. The team also drilled a lateral section to 3,390 meters.
“By combining the PDM with a set of complementary tools, we were able to extend its capabilities and deliver results beyond our expectations,” explains Jonathan Ghesla, Drilling Expert.
Overcoming the challenge required a combination of international experience and deep knowledge of the reservoir, as well as the ability to adapt global best practices to the specific conditions of Fortín de Piedra.
Support from the Real Time Operations Center (RTOC) in Buenos Aires was critical for real-time remote monitoring, enabling the team to execute the plan with greater precision and respond quickly to changing conditions. “Managing execution from the operations center allows us to optimize multiple processes and ensure more accurate implementation,” says Iván Griso, Principal Drilling Manager. “This is a competitive advantage that sets Tecpetrol apart from other operators in the Neuquén Basin.”
Roberto Damián Ron, Drilling Planning Expert, highlights the months of preparation behind the record. “To address the technical complexities, we held numerous meetings, developed estimates and ran simulations. It took six months to work through each decision, but it gave us the confidence to move forward and achieve a really strong outcome.” Tecpetrol's continued investment in technology, combined with its expertise in available technologies and operational capabilities and its long-term strategic vision, also played a key role in making the achievement possible.
Collaborative teamwork as a competitive advantage
Beyond the technology itself, the achievement reflects Tecpetrol's ability to bring multidisciplinary teams together around a shared objective. “The success we had in this endeavor demonstrates not only the company’s organizational capabilities, but also the commitment with which our teams tackle each project,” highlights Alexis Pagani, Well Design Director.
For Jonathan Ghesla, one of the most rewarding aspects was that they hit their target on the first attempt. “When we finally made it, I felt a huge sense of relief. It's an extremely challenging initiative, and other companies have tried and failed. Achieving this result was incredibly satisfying.”
Looking ahead, the focus is on continuing to refine the technology and building on the progress achieved so far. “This isn’t a finish line, but a starting point. We’ve built a solid foundation for the opportunities ahead, and we’re determined to keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible,” Alexis concludes.
