The road to net-zero, lithium, new technologies and innovation: the latest news from Inside Energy Transition

Our latest edition takes a look at the different initiatives under way at each of the companies in terms of CO2 reduction and energy efficiency, as well as the instruments being set up to fuel the development of disruptive technologies. 

In this sixth installment, our Inside Energy Transition newsletter goes behind the scenes to reveal how Tecpetrol worked with Techint E&C to carry out the design and start-up of the Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) pilot plant in Salta, Argentina, at 4,100 meters above sea level—all in a record time of just seven months.

Another article explores the latest efforts by TechEnergy Ventures, the investment branch of Tecpetrol's Energy Transition Unit, which has just announced its intention to support Quino Energy. This start-up is working to bring an affordable long-term renewable energy storage solution to the market, an innovative development pioneered by a group of Harvard researchers, aimed at reducing the intermittency inherent to wind and solar energy.

This edition also showcases big news from Ternium, which has recently completed a benchmarking exercise to measure greenhouse gas emissions across its industry, in line with the accounting standards enshrined in the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. The application of the GHG Protocol standard dovetails with the company's current sustainability reporting framework according to worldsteel's CO2 emissions reporting methodology.

In other news, the spotlight falls on Tenova, which is leading the way with the development and provision of sustainable solutions for the green transition in the metals industry. The company has just signed a contract with the Australian company Latrobe Magnesium Limited (LMG) to collaborate on engineering, supplies and oversight at its magnesium oxide (MgO) production plant in Victoria. The project envisages the development of a demonstration pilot project using the world's first combined hydrometallurgical/thermal reduction process.

Finally, Tenaris recently partnered with Indonesian oil major Pertamina to host a seminar in Jakarta, Indonesia, focusing on carbon capture and storage (CCS) in the context of innovation in drilling technologies and materials for some 270 participants from the national oil and gas company.
